Candle Wicks

Candle making wicks are the essential component of a candle that provides the flame that burns the wax. They are typically made from braided cotton or other natural fibers, such as hemp or wood.

The size and type of wick used in a candle will depend on a variety of factors, including the size and shape of the candle, the type of wax being used, and the desired burn time and fragrance throw. Choosing the right wick is important for ensuring that the candle burns evenly and cleanly, with a stable flame and minimal smoke or soot.

Wicks are available in a variety of sizes and thicknesses, ranging from thin wicks for small votive candles to thick wicks for large pillar candles. When choosing a wick for a candle, it's important to consider the size and shape of the candle, as well as the type of wax and fragrance being used. A wick that is too small may result in a weak flame or poor burning characteristics, while a wick that is too large may result in excessive smoke or soot.

Overall, candle making wicks are a crucial component of a well-made and safe candle. By choosing the right wick for the candle being made, candle makers can ensure that their candles burn evenly, cleanly, and with a stable flame, providing a beautiful and enjoyable experience for the user.

Candle Wicks

A candle is much more than just the stem and, if you choose one, the holder in which it is mounted.

You can massively alter the character and appearance of your candles while they are being burned with your choice of wick.

The wick you choose will have a bearing on the whole character of the complete candle, and especially, the type and intensity of the light and heat which it produces.

Candle Wicks FAQs

How do I pick the right kind of wick for my candle?

You might be surprised by the variety of types of wick available - but we can help steer you in the right direction.

The most commonly used wick type for many types of candles has a zinc core, which helps support the wick and keep it upright while it is being lit and during burning.

If you want your candles to generate more heat, and have suitably large containers in which to hold them, paper wicks are a more eco-friendly option.

A further type  of wick, favoured by many experienced candlemakers, is known as the CD Series. These are flat braided and have a special paper filament woven around them, which is intended to produce a thin, elegant flame which will burn consistently over a long period of time.

The newest type of candle wick available is made from wood. Wooden wicks burn very consistently for long periods, but produce large wax pools, so are only suitable for candles which are housed in a suitable glass container.

How do I pick the right size of wick for my candles?

The size of wick is governed by the diameter of the candle on which it’s being used, but because of the wide variety of wick and candle sizes available, this is one of the trickiest questions to answer.

But as a rule of thumb, the lower the viscosity of the burnt wax you are using, the smaller the size of wick we would recommend.

If you choose a wick which is too small, you are likely to find that your candle won’t burn evenly across its top, or will ‘tunnel’, creating a hollow in its top surface closest to the wick.

Using too large a wick will not only cause your candle’s flame to flicker, but it will also cause a larger wax pool, and mean that it gives off more carbon. This, in time, will leave sooty deposits all around your candle’s holder, which not only smells unpleasant, but over time, can be damaging to your health if you don’t ventilate the rooms where you have your candles well.

To help you make your choice, we have compiled a comprehensive chart to help you choose the right candle wick for your requirements, which takes into account the candle size and the material/s the candle is made from.
